Share of taxes on the retail price of a pack of cigarettes. This includes all taxes and is based on one pack (20 cigarettes) of the most sold brand in the country.
What the numbers show
Taxes as a share of cigarette price is currently reported for 189 countries. The highest value is 89.4% in Finland; the lowest is 5.7% in Guinea-Bissau.
The median across all reporting countries is 55.2%, and the mean is 53.9%.
The gap between the highest and lowest reporting country is a factor of about 16.
Over the past decade 117 countries rose and 68 fell. The largest increase was in Iraq (up 1,232.3%), and the largest decrease in Cuba (down 87.2%).
